The government has raised the single bus fare cap from £2 to £3, representing a 50% increase. However, some fares have escalated even further. For instance, a Child’s Return fare on certain routes has surged from £2.10 to £5.00, a staggering 138% increase. It is unacceptable to witness fare hikes that significantly exceed the rate of inflation.
138% increase
Ian Roome, Member of Parliament for North Devon took to Social Media to urge North Devon residents to sign a petition (link for petition is below). Here is what his post said:
I’ve been inundated with shocking examples of just how significantly this will affect local households. Students in particular have contacted me with substantial increases to their travel to and from school and college. Many will be hit hard by this new cap, not least during an ongoing cost-of-living crisis.
Not just financially, but environmentally too it’s the wrong decision. We need to incentivise public transport use over cars, especially given the summer traffic here in North Devon.
I am calling on Stagecoach and the Government to explain these excessive increases and demand a better approach.
Get involved and help put a stop to these price hikes
