It has been reported that Instow was saved from flooding last week due to the swift actions of local pub owner, Mr. Chris Hopkins.
Instow was recently saved from flooding thanks to the proactive measures taken by local pub owner, parish councillor, and district council by-election candidate, Mr. Chris Hopkins.
He identified blocked drainage channels as a critical issue when rising water levels threatened the village.
Hopkins organized a team to clear a path through the sand. This allowed water to drain away safely, preventing potential damage to homes and businesses.
This action was particularly vital as residents had previously highlighted concerns about sand build-up and inadequate drainage systems. Which had not been adequately addressed despite repeated warnings from the community. Hopkins, running as a Conservative Party candidate, emphasized the need for representatives who act rather than merely discuss issues.
Instow saved from flooding
“Too often, we see endless discussions and delays while our village faces real challenges. This isn’t about party politics, it’s about stepping up when it matters,” Mr Hopkins said.
“We need representatives who take action, not just talk about it. Instow deserves better, and I’ll make sure we get it.”

Something needs doing
This problem is nothing new, below is a post from Councillor Frank Biederman dating 22nd November 2022.
Instow Flood Water
Where to start?
I was called this afternoon by a disabled resident who was marooned in her house, so went to investigate.
Myself and Selaine Saxby MP have been for weeks chasing different agencies to take some action, over the flooding on Instow seafront.
We actually got a multi agency meeting tomorrow. Hopefully, we will get some answers on who is responsible for what and what the solution is.
short story is the County Council cannot move sand, without a permit from natural England, they also contend that as the beach is in private ownership, it’s not their responsibility for beach management.
My argument this afternoon was, surely it was putting the safety of residents and property at risk, as well as having a severe effect on local business.
So eventually after hours of trying to pump the water off the road, DCC agreed to call it an emergency response and the JCB was called, within an hour. Which managed to dig an outlet to the drains and the water began to disperse.
So thankfully residents can sleep a bit easier tonight, the pub can re-open and people can walk freely on the pavement. There will need to be a clean up of the silt left, so do be careful on the path.
There might be a slight problem accessing the beach opposite the boathouse, so use another access for now. The JCB driver was going to try and clear an access, without blocking the water from running off.
A massive thank you to DCC Highway officers and contractors for their help this afternoon.
